Sam Kazemian, Mahbod Moghadam, Travis Moore, and Tedde Forselious founded Everipedia, a Wikipedia for the twenty-first century, in July 2015.
I got to have a conversation with them and their founding team and find out more about how they've used distinctive marketing strategies to increase their success.
Their mission was to do anything and everything to oust pageviews from one of the biggest sites in the world, Wikipedia, which is the seventh largest site in the world and receives an estimated 300 million unique page views a month.
They reached 1 million page views per month after being online for around 9 months, and currently, they average over 3 million.
There are many lessons to be learnt from their grit, and from our conversation, I gleaned 10 practical suggestions for going from zero to one million page visits each month.

In today's world, this is essentially a must for everything. Social media is gradually replacing traditional marketing channels.
Although it can be challenging, developing a loyal following on social media can be quite beneficial for your traffic. Currently, only our social media networks account for 10–20% of Everipedia's traffic, or roughly 300–500k pageviews each month.
Consistency is essential for growing and utilising your social media networks.
You should use the same images, headlines, links, and posts across all of your networks. Because of this uniformity, all of your customers will find your page and see the stuff you promote whether they look to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or Tinder for their news.
Additionally, be sure to include hashtags in every one of your posts to avoid losing out on a significant portion of social media's organic search traffic.

Improve Your Engagement on Social Media
You need to interact with users on social media in addition to just maintaining high-quality accounts.
Facebook groups have significantly reduced the need for forums and made it easier to target particular populations. Twitter has made it quite simple to follow the trends and keywords of your intended audience.
You can interact directly with folks who might be interested in your website by using these two methods, search engine marketing, and targeted hashtags. Maintaining this level of interaction and outreach is cost-free and pays off by growing your fan base.

Encourage virility
In 2015, The Kardashian Klan earned a couple hundred million dollars, and in 2016, they'll earn much more.
Why?
They are adept at creating and managing press and social media buzz thanks to their knowledge of the attention economy. Even a distasteful rumour has the power to generate a tonne of traffic for users' individual apps, websites, and projects.
You can get advantages if you can imitate or capitalise on similar trends.

Always work to improve your SEO
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is essentially just a series of procedures to follow to make sure your website appears as high as possible in Google searches.
Five pillars form the framework of SEO.
First, keywords are essentially the search terms you want your website to appear for.
Following that, incoming links describe the number of sites referring to you, the keywords they are pointing to, and the authority of those sites.
Thirdly, your ranking climbs the more traffic you receive.
Fourth, since Google only wants to promote the first edition, the quantity of unique content on your site raises its ranking.
Last but not least, related to the first pillar, Google awards points for both the most recent and the oldest material for any given link. As a result, while you may have a honeymoon phase early on, you will need to put up a strong fight over time to outrank a site that was created in 1999.
PR is a waste of time and money.
Although the press is good and can be a cool thing to mention to friends or add to your CV, it won't bring you anywhere close to 1,000 page views for each story, let alone 1 million.
Your time would be better spent concentrating on growth hacks and expansion than trying to get published in the New York Times or Wall Street Journal for the sake of traffic and momentum.
More importantly, all projects and startups can get press; all you need is a compelling tale. Giving money to any writer will probably result in a loss on an investment, and spending $5,000 a month on a PR business is simply a waste of money.
Shame, leave it at the door.
You must consistently promote a website if you want it to succeed — always publishing in your personal channels and doing everything in your power to spread the word.
I encounter folks who are too hesitant to explore choices, approach investors, writers, or unicorn founders, or who are worried about how self-promotion would make them appear.
This is always the wrong strategy to choose. You shouldn't be working on a project or company full-time if you care about something else more than it, and you won't ever reach the million-page views per month club.
Seven days a week of work
To reach a million page views each month, you must average 35k page views per day, and this statistic excludes weekends.
So you can't either.
In keeping with the prior idea, if your preferred weekend activity is visiting the beach, you are not doing things correctly.
Extreme dedication and a tremendous amount of labour that must be done continuously are needed to build and maintain a site.
Entrepreneurs work 90 hours a week to avoid working 40, as Lori Greiner puts it.
For websites, this is especially true because every day is a valuable opportunity to attract visitors, and if you aren't marketing any kind of content or experience, you are missing out on chances.
The Everipedia crew responded when I inquired about their personal work schedule:
"The whole Everipedia staff lives and works out of a penthouse in Los Angeles, which serves as the company's headquarters. I'll admit that there will be a few days each month when I won't leave the building because I'm too busy working on my computer. While we attempt to strike a balance between going to the gym and setting aside a few hours each month for fun, in reality, the site and its success are our sole priorities. We modelled this after one of our cofounders' former businesses, RapGenius, which is currently in the top 1,000 websites worldwide and which we like to believe is a common factor in the success of both sites."
Make Company Culture a Cult
My grandfather owned several different companies, and he once told me something that stuck with me to this day: "The beginning should always be great, this is your honeymoon before things turn bumpy. The most successful companies manage to maintain their partnership "honeymoon feeling" throughout time.
Cracks will eventually appear if you and your team are not utterly and utterly madly in love with one another, the project, and the objective.
If you would allow anything to come between you and your company/team, as is the current tendency for reaching a million a month, then it is not the correct thing for you.
Take the Kool-Aid, be in love, and be passionate.
Always Be Creating (content)
The Key is the content.
The first-time viewers from last month won't be the returning viewers from this month if you don't keep adding content, improving features, and generally continuing to surpass people's expectations.
The monthly active users and daily active users are the most significant statistics, as is the case with the majority of apps.
These statistics are the result of sustained, ongoing interest in the app's or website's content.
You must continue to impress them in order to develop these devoted users and content readers who act as brand ambassadors and generate recurring monthly pageviews from the same demographic.
Never purchase pageviews.
The traction purchased is not traction.
Google is also adept at distinguishing between items receiving clicks from Bangladeshi click farms and those that are legitimately trending pages, and it is not particularly forgiving of individuals who try to manipulate the system.
Additionally, since most ad networks and VC funds are adamantly opposed to false traffic, you can end up being burned when you try to join them or apply for funding.
Overall, fake traffic is undoubtedly the deceptively valuable but ultimately poisonous apple of the Garden of Eden. Why pay more than $1 per click through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or AdWords when the likelihood of those clicks becoming loyal customers is so slim?
The main lesson to be learned from this is that pageviews are not everything.
Take the Kool-Aid, be in love, and be passionate. According to the Pareto Principle, sometimes referred to as the 80/20 Rule, only 20% of your efforts and activities will produce 80% of your results. Applying this to your site, you might find that roughly: 20% of your posts generate 80% of blog visitors. The top 20% of your posts generate 80% of your money.
