NDA Syllabus

The NDA examination comprises 270 questions, 120 for section A, that is mathematics, and 150 for section B, that is, the General Ability section. The detailed syllabus for each of these Sections  is as follows:

ALGEBRA
  • Concept of set, operations on sets, Venn diagrams.
  • De Morgan laws, Cartesian product, relation, equivalence relation.
  • Representation of real numbers on a line.
  • Complex numbers—basic properties, modulus, argument, cube roots of unity.
  • Binary system of numbers.
  • Conversion of a number in decimal system to binary system and vice-versa. Arithmetic, Geometric and Harmonic progressions.
  • Quadratic equations with real coefficients.
  • Solution of linear inequations of two variables by graphs.
  • Permutation and Combination.
  • Binomial theorem and its applications.
  • Logarithms and their applications.
MATRICES AND DETERMINANTS
  • Types of matrices, operations on matrices.
  • Determinant of a matrix, basic properties of determinants. Adjoint and inverse of a square matrix, Applications-Solution of a system of linear equations in two or three unknowns by Cramer’s rule and by Matrix Method.
TRIGONOMETRY
  • Angles and their measures in degrees and in radians. Trigonometrical ratios.
  • Trigonometric identities Sum and difference formulae.
  • Multiple and Sub-multiple angles.
  • Inverse trigonometric functions.
  • Applications-Height and distance, properties of triangles.
ANALYTICAL GEOMETRY OF TWO AND THREE DIMENSIONS
  • Rectangular Cartesian Coordinate system.

  • Equation of a line in various forms.

  • Distance of a point from a line.
  • Equation of a circle in standard and in general form. Standard forms of parabola, ellipse and hyperbola. Eccentricity and axis of a conic.

DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS

INTEGRAL CALCULUS AND DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

  • Evaluation of definite integrals—determination of areas of plane regions bounded by curves—applications.
  • Definition of order and degree of a differential equation, formation of a differential equation by examples.

VECTOR ALGEBRA

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY
Statistics :
  • Classification of data, Frequency distribution, cumulative frequency distribution—examples.
  • Graphical representation—Histogram, Pie Chart, frequency polygon— examples.
  • Measures of Central tendency—Mean, median and mode. Variance and standard deviation—determination and comparison.
  • Correlation and regression.

Probability :
  • Random experiment, outcomes and associated sample space, events, mutually exclusive and exhaustive events, impossible and certain events.
  • Union and Intersection of events.
  • Complementary, elementary and composite events. Definition of probability—classical and statistical—examples.
  • Elementary theorems on probability—simple problems.
  • Conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem—simple problems.
  • Random variable as function on a sample space.
  • Binomial distribution, examples of random experiments giving rise to Binominal distribution.

NDA Syllabus for General Knowledge

This section broadly covers questions from Physics, Chemistry, General Science, Social Studies, Geography and Current Events. The syllabus for each of these is as follows:
Physics Physical Properties and States of Matter, Mass, Weight, Volume, Density and Specific Gravity, Principle of Archimedes, Pressure Barometer.
Motion of objects, Velocity and Acceleration, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Force and Momentum, Parallelogram of Forces, Stability and Equilibrium of bodies, Gravitation, elementary ideas of work, Power and Energy.
Effects of Heat, Measurement of Temperature and Heat, change of State and Latent Heat, Modes of transference of Heat.
Sound waves and their properties, Simple musical instruments. Rectilinear propagation of Light, Reflection and refraction.
Spherical mirrors and Lenses, Human Eye.
Natural and Artificial Magnets, Properties of a Magnet, Earth as a Magnet. Static and Current Electricity, conductors and Nonconductors, Ohm’s Law, Simple Electrical Circuits, Heating, Lighting and Magnetic effects of Current, Measurement of Electrical Power, Primary and Secondary Cells, Use of X-Rays.
General Principles in the working of the following: Simple Pendulum, Simple Pulleys, Siphon, Levers, Balloon, Pumps, Hydrometer, Pressure Cooker, Thermos Flask, Gramophone, Telegraphs, Telephone, Periscope, Telescope, Microscope, Mariner’s Compass; Lightening Conductors, Safety Fuses.
Chemistry Physical and Chemical changes.
Elements, Mixtures and Compounds, Symbols, Formulae and simple Chemical Equations, Law of Chemical Combination (excluding problems). Properties of Air and Water.

NDA Exam Pattern

After the NDA Syllabus, candidates must be aware of NDA Exam pattern. There are two sections in NDA Written Exam- Mathematics and General Ability Test. The exam is conducted in offline mode.  The detailed exam pattern for NDA is as follows:

The General Ability Test (GAT) comprises of the following subjects:
  • General English
  • General Knowledge
  • There are 50 questions in the English section.
  • While the GK section has 100 questions.

What is NDA ?

NDA stands for National Defence Academy which is situated in Khadakwasla, Pune. It is a tri-service academy where cadets of all the three armed forces train together for three years.

What is the eligibility criteria for NDA 2022?

NATIONALITY 1. Applicant must be an Indian citizen/subject of Bhutan /subject of Nepal or refugee from Tibet who came to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention to reside permanently in India.
2. Migrants : Those who have migrated from Burma ,Pakistan,Sri Lanka and East African countries of Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda, Malawi, Zaire and Vietnam or Ethiopia with an intention of settlement are also eligible to apply.
3. Foreign Nationals can also apply provided they can produce eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.
AGE The minimum age limit is that candidates should be 15.7 years/ 16 years of age during the commencement of the course and the maximum age limit is that candidates should be 18.7 years/19 years of age during the commencement of the course.
GENDER Both male and female candidates can apply.
MARITAL STATUS Candidate should be unmarried.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION FOR ARMY WING : Candidates should have passed class 10 and 12 from a recognised board with any subjects.
FOR AIR FORCE AND NAVY WING : Candidates should have passed class 10 and 12 from a recognised board with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
NOTE:Candidates who are or will be appearing for their Class 12 board examinations or are awaiting their results are also eligible to apply.

What is the exam pattern of NDA 2022?

NDA recuitment process involves two stages- first is the written exam and those who qualify the written exam have to appear for the SSB interview and clear the same to be finally selected into NDA.

What is the written exam pattern of NDA 2022?

The exam paper is divided into two sections - Mathematics and General Ability Test.

UPSC has released the examination dates for NDA 2022. NDA exam is conducted twice in a year. NDA(I) 2022 will be conducted on 10 April, 2022.

The fee for General and OBC category candidates is INR 100 while candidates belonging to SC/ST category and those who are sons of JCOs, NCOs, ORs are exempted from fee payment. 

What is the cut-off for NDA written exam?

The cut-off for the written exam varies from year to year depending on the difficulty level of the question paper. It usually ranges between 250-350 marks however, for the last three years the cut-off has been between 320-350 marks.

Army cadets join the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Air Force cadets join the Indian Air Force Academy in Telangana while the Navy cadets join the Indian Naval Academy in Kerala. After getting trained in these academies for a fixed tenure cadets pass out as officers of the Indian Armed Forces and serve in various parts of the country.
